If You’ve Tried Therapy and Still Feel Stuck

Many people who pursue EMDR intensive therapy are not new to therapy.

They've done the work. They've gained insight into their patterns. They've talked through painful experiences. They've worked hard to heal.

Yet something still doesn't feel resolved.

The same triggers remain.

The same emotional reactions return.

The same patterns continue repeating.

If that's your experience, it doesn't mean you've failed, and it doesn't mean therapy can't help.

It may simply mean your brain has not fully processed the traumatic experiences that continue triggering your nervous system.

EMDR intensive therapy is designed to help your brain process those experiences so they no longer feel as though they are happening in the present.

Trauma Recovery Institute provides EMDR intensive therapy in Fairbanks, Alaska for adults throughout Alaska, across the United States, and internationally. Some clients travel for increased privacy and dedicated treatment time, while others participate from within Alaska or through virtual preparation and follow-up services.

What Is EMDR Intensive Therapy?

Traditional therapy often schedules trauma processing in 50-minute weekly sessions. While that format works well for many people, it also means stopping, returning to everyday life, and then restarting the process again the following week.

EMDR Intensive Therapy offers a different approach.

Instead of spreading treatment across months—or sometimes years—we work together for approximately 6–7 hours per day over several consecutive days, allowing the therapeutic process to build from one day to the next. Depending on your history, treatment goals, and the number of memories being processed, an intensive may extend beyond a single week.

Rather than repeatedly starting and stopping, your brain and nervous system remain engaged in the healing process, allowing us to maintain momentum while balancing trauma processing with nervous system regulation, integration, and rest.

An EMDR intensive may allow you to:

✓ Maintain therapeutic momentum across consecutive treatment days

✓ Process multiple traumatic memories within a single intensive

✓ Reduce the repeated "starting over" that can occur between weekly sessions

✓ Make meaningful progress in days that might otherwise take months of weekly therapy

Research on intensive EMDR treatment formats suggests that, for appropriately selected clients, intensive therapy can produce outcomes comparable to weekly EMDR while allowing many people to make substantial progress in a shorter period of time.

Return Home with Greater Peace, Calm, and Freedom

Healing doesn't begin by reliving trauma. It begins with understanding how your brain and nervous system respond after trauma, learning evidence-based regulation skills, and building confidence before processing difficult memories.

What Trauma Recovery Healing Can Feel Like

Every person's experience is unique, and individual results vary. These are de-identified reflections shared by former EMDR intensive clients after treatment.

"I feel free."

"I haven't felt peace and calm in my body in over 15 years."

"I finally feel like myself again."

"I got my life back."

"My nervous system finally feels calm."

While every person's experience is different, many clients describe leaving with a greater sense of peace, emotional freedom, and hope than when they arrived.

Who Is EMDR Intensive Therapy For?

EMDR intensive therapy may be a good fit if you:

✓ Have tried therapy but still feel stuck

✓ Understand your patterns but continue reacting in ways you wish you could change

✓ Are functioning well on the outside while struggling internally

✓ Want a focused, immersive approach to trauma recovery

✓ Prefer to make meaningful progress over several consecutive days rather than spreading treatment across months or years

✓ Are seeking an evidence-based treatment for PTSD, complex trauma, or other trauma-related symptoms

✓ Value privacy, dedicated time, and the opportunity to focus fully on your healing

Many people who choose an EMDR intensive are not new to therapy—they're looking for a different approach.

They've gained insight. They've worked hard. They simply want an opportunity to move beyond understanding their trauma toward processing it.

If you're looking for a focused, evidence-based approach that helps you build momentum over several consecutive days, an EMDR intensive may be the right fit.

Not everyone benefits from the same treatment approach. The next step is understanding whether an EMDR intensive is the right fit for your unique history, goals, and circumstances.

Why Some People Choose to Travel for EMDR Intensive Therapy

Many people make excellent progress working with a therapist close to home. Others choose to travel for EMDR intensive therapy because stepping away from their everyday environment allows them to focus more fully on healing.

People choose to travel for many different reasons, including:

Privacy and Confidentiality

Some individuals prefer receiving treatment outside their local community, particularly professionals, business owners, healthcare providers, therapists, first responders, public-facing professionals, and those living in smaller communities where they are more likely to encounter people they know.

Receiving treatment away from home can provide greater privacy and allow people to focus on their recovery without concerns about running into colleagues, clients, patients, neighbors, or acquaintances.

Fewer Daily Interruptions

Work responsibilities, family obligations, emails, appointments, and other daily demands don't simply disappear because you've decided to prioritize healing.

Traveling for an intensive allows many people to temporarily step away from those responsibilities and devote uninterrupted time to treatment, reflection, and recovery.

Focused Time for Healing

Unlike weekly therapy, an EMDR intensive provides several consecutive days dedicated to assessment, nervous system regulation, trauma processing, integration, and rest.

Many people appreciate being able to remain engaged in the therapeutic process rather than repeatedly stopping and restarting from week to week.

A Change of Environment

For some individuals, healing in a different environment creates enough physical and psychological distance from everyday stressors to focus more fully on recovery.

While travel itself isn't therapeutic, creating space away from familiar routines and responsibilities may help some people engage more deeply in the healing process.

What to Expect EMDR Intensive Day-by-Day Process

What to Expect During an EMDR Intensive

Every EMDR intensive is individualized to your history, goals, and treatment needs. While no two intensives are exactly alike, each follows a structured process designed to help you feel prepared before trauma processing begins.

Before Your Intensive

Before traveling to Fairbanks, or beginning virtually, you'll complete a comprehensive assessment and preparation session. Together we'll review your history, identify treatment goals, answer your questions, and develop an individualized treatment plan.

During Your Intensive

Across several consecutive days we'll move through a deliberate sequence:

✓ Understanding how trauma has affected your brain and nervous system

✓ Learning evidence-based nervous system regulation skills

✓ Building confidence through guided practice

✓ EMDR trauma processing

✓ Integration throughout the intensive

Rather than simply processing traumatic memories, we'll continually move between moments of activation and regulation so your nervous system learns it can safely return to a calmer state.

After Your Intensive

Healing continues after your intensive concludes.

You'll receive follow-up support, recommendations for continued care when appropriate, and practical skills you can continue using long after you return home.

Every intensive is tailored to the individual, so the number of treatment days and specific treatment plan are determined during your consultation and assessment.

Investment

EMDR Intensive Therapy Investment

4-Day EMDR Intensive: $9,960*

For many people, the decision isn't simply about the cost of an EMDR intensive. It's about the value of making meaningful progress over several consecutive days rather than continuing to struggle with symptoms that have persisted despite previous treatment.

The average EMDR intensive is four days, although some individuals benefit from a shorter intensive while others require additional days depending on their history, treatment goals, and the number of traumatic memories being addressed.
